The DOT approved, patented Integrated Energy-Absorbing Underrun Bumper
The HOPE SAFE-T-BAR has many years proven road experience. Originally designed taking an idea from the famous HOPE anti jack knife device, the energy absorbing principals of the HOPE SAFE-T-BAR provide a creative, simple and effective underrun guard.
Originally designed over 10 years ago to meet the requirements of FMVSS 223 and 224, the design intent from the outset was to create an energy absorbing, cost effective and easily maintained underride guard. 10 years of successful service proves it works!
Easy maintenance = less cost
The HOPE SAFE-T-BAR can sustain impacts of between 10,000 to 40,000 pounds force as required by FMVSS 223 and 224 and simply be “re set” following the torque requirements specified by HOPE installation instructions, this will keep the certification in effect. Avoiding the need for the costly repairs associated with rigid welded underride guards that require extensive workshop time to repair or replace.
For additional ease of maintenance, as well as to keep cost to a minimum, as much welding as possible has been eliminated from the HOPE SAFE-T-BAR design. Easily bolted to the trailer chassis using grade 8 bolts, the HOPE SAFE-T-BAR is available in three fitting options all of which allow easy replacement should the guard become severely damaged.
DOT certification & easy to fit = less design time.
The HOPE safe-T-bar came from Europe after 17 years on the road there. The USA version employs the disc brake principal to absorb energy through the two compact mounting bracket assemblies. Each assembly can take 40,000 pounds of force while absorbing 9,400 foot-pounds of energy… and still be re set with no damage!
Normal docking does not move the bumper since it takes 10,000 pounds of force to actuate the energy absorbing feature.
These results were certified by the independent test facilities of MGA Research (Wisconsin) and Taylor Woodrow labs in the UK.
The DOT certification tag is attached to every HOPE safe-T-bar. Therefore it is not necessary to design and test your own bumper when you can get our testing and certification with your purchase! For trailer manufacturers that’s a lot less design time.
